E36 Super Comp Cooling Kit (Type 12)
A number of things contribute to cooling efficiency, e.g.; fluid capacity, fin design, material, etc. Zionsville Autosport's Alloy Radiator has a core thickness of 33 mm. It is important to note that core area takes priority over core thickness. As a general rule, the core area in square inches should be greater than the engine displacement plus fifty. For example, the 3.2 S52 motor is approximately 200ci. In order for a radiator to efficiently cool this engine, the core area should be at least 250 square inches. The surface area of ZA's Alloy Radiator is 374 square inches.
ZA's Alloy Radiators also use a high efficiency core similar to a stock radiator. High efficiency cores have more fins per inch, more tubes per core and more cooling capacity. Each row has a single, large tube. The flat side of the tube is in direct contact with the fins which transfers heat from the tube walls to the fins. Since the rounded ends of the tube are not in direct contact with the fin, this portion of the tube does not aid in secondary cooling. The more tubes per row, the more rounded ends, and the less direct contact there is between the tubes and the fins. ZA uses a single tube for better heat dissipation.
Cooling improvement also comes from larger radiant surfaces on the tanks. The alloy tanks themselves have a high level of thermal conductivity which helps to dissipate heat into air instead of back into the engine. In addition, the tanks on ZA's Alloy Radiator are larger than the tanks on a stock radiator. This results in a 65% increase in coolant capacity.
The E36 Super Comp Cooling Kit is designed for maximum cooling protection.
This kit includes a specially designed alloy radiator which incorporates an engine oil cooler. In order to eliminate
another weak link in the cooling system, we have designed an aluminum expansion tank which mounts to the integrated
aluminum fan shroud. The shroud itself provides a stable platform on which to install the fourteen inch Spal puller
fan. (Hanging a fan directly on the core is a bad idea.) Another unique feature is the addition of cooling flaps
in the shroud which open up at higher speeds to improve air flow. This setup allows for the removal of the engine
driven fan and clutch as well as the auxiliary fan in front of the radiator. If you want the best, this is it.
Wiring Options
Auxiliary Fan Delete I ( + $62.00 )
This is the recommended approach. With this option, the SPAL electric fan is wired into the existing car harness and
operates on the auxiliary fan circuit. However, to remove the factory auxiliary fan, one must dismantle the front end of the car.
It's a lot of extra work, but the results are worth it.
This package includes the necessary wiring components for
single (high) speed operation.
Auxiliary Fan Delete II ( + $110.00 )
Same as above, but this version includes additional components
for two (low-high) speed operation.
Single Speed Fan Kit ( + $89.95 )
This option includes one wiring kit. The factory auxiliary fan is retained. The SPAL fan operates at a single speed
on its own circuit.
Two Speed Fan Kit ( + $149.95 )
This option includes two wiring kits and a resistor. The factory auxiliary fan is retained. The SPAL fan operates at two speeds
on its own circuit.
